The film "Avatar: Fire and Ash," directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron, was originally scheduled for release in Hong Kong on Dec. 18. Due to its Chinese title containing the word "fire," and to avoid associating it with the recent five-alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, the studio earlier announced that the film would be renamed "Avatar 3" and postponed until 2026.
Today (Dec. 18), 20th Century Studios officially announced on social media the new release date for "Avatar 3." The film will now open in Hong Kong cinemas on Jan. 8, 2026. Ticket sale dates will be announced by cinema chains at a later time. Along with the delay, promotional posters in Hong Kong have been updated to remove the Chinese subtitle "Fire and Ashes" and related visual elements.
On Nov. 26, a five-alarm fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, resulting in significant casualties. Following the incident, the studio behind the "Avatar" franchise issued a statement explaining: "In light of the recent tragic incident in Tai Po and out of respect for the Hong Kong community, the release of 'Avatar 3,' originally scheduled for next week, has been postponed to 2026. We extend our deepest condolences to all affected residents. The new release date will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and continued support."
