Leung Chun-ying criticized Western media like The New York Times and BBC over their coverage of the Jimmy Lai case in Facebook posts, slamming their hypocrisy on press freedom.
In an English post, Leung challenged the outlets to hire unemployed former Apple Daily reporters based in the UK and the US if they truly cared about press freedom related to Lai's case. In a Chinese post, he lambasted BBC Chinese for a feature on Lai, accusing Apple Daily of using sensationalism and fraud to push anti-Hong Kong views and radicalizing young students. He also mocked the BBC for its double standards, noting the outlet was sued for defamation over coverage of Donald Trump while ignoring Apple Daily's more extreme tactics.
Leung branded Apple Daily "a disgrace to Hong Kong" and said Lai would be "a disgrace to the UK" if he held British nationality.
