Hong Kong's High Court on Monday found media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, founder of the now-defunct tabloid Apple Daily, guilty of violating the National Security Law for Hong Kong, including on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces.
Three Apple Daily-related companies -- Apple Daily Ltd, Apple Daily Printing Ltd, and AD Internet Ltd -- were also found guilty on two charges: Conspiracy to print, publish, sell, offer for sale, distribute, display, and/or reproduce seditious publications, and conspiracy to commit collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security.
The Publisher and Chief Curator of the Bastille Post, Lo Wing-hung, stated that Lai is not a "media person" but a traitor compromising national interests. He affirmed that the trial was fair and transparent, emphasizing that genuine journalists do not engage in illegal activities like Lai's.
Lo dismissed concerns about press freedom in Hong Kong, asserting that typical media operations do not resemble Lai's actions. He noted that the conviction serves as a significant warning to society about the consequences of colluding with foreign governments, urging everyone to adhere to the law for Hong Kong's stability and security.
