Chief Executive John Lee met with the media this afternoon (Dec. 12) at the Government Headquarters regarding the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po. He stated that the investigation report on the residential building fire will be completed within nine months. The government will comprehensively assist residents in rebuilding their homes, aiming to restore normal life as soon as possible based on "compassion, reason, and law."
John Lee pointed out that after the fire occurred, the government took swift action, quickly providing temporary housing for over 4,000 affected residents in various accommodations, including hotels, youth hostels, and transitional housing, to ensure that residents receive basic living support.
To implement long-term assistance, John Lee has instructed the head of the emergency accommodation arrangement task force, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, to coordinate relevant policy bureaus and departments to research and propose specific plans. These plans will adhere to the principles of "compassion, reason, and law," fully considering the individual circumstances and wishes of residents while ensuring the efficient use of public resources to help affected families rebuild their homes.
John Lee indicated that the government has noted several suggestions raised in society, including the Housing Authority purchasing property rights from owners, allowing owners of Wang Fuk Court to have priority in buying Home Ownership Scheme flats, and building additional Home Ownership Scheme units in the Tai Po area. He understands that each resident has different preferences and has instructed Michael Wong to comprehensively collect feedback from the affected individuals and develop subsequent plans based on this feedback to provide suitable options for residents.
