The election for the eighth Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) took place on Dec. 7, with the full list of 90 legislators announced on the morning of Dec. 8. In a social media post, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan extended his congratulations to all the successfully elected legislators and expressed his gratitude to the 161 candidates, various sectors of society, civil service colleagues, and every voter who actively participated in the election.
Chan congratulated the elected legislators and acknowledged the efforts of the 161 candidates from different sectors. He also thanked all sectors of society for their active participation, noting that the successful election of the new Legislative Council during this sorrowful and challenging time provides crucial support for the HKSAR to achieve good governance. He further expressed appreciation to every voter who cast their ballots, describing their participation as a significant force driving post-disaster recovery and reform efforts. Chan also commended the civil servants who remained dedicated and performed their duties diligently on election day, emphasizing that their commitment and hard work ensured the election was completed openly, fairly, honestly, and in an orderly manner.
Chan stated that the HKSAR government looks forward to collaborating closely with the new Legislative Council. On one hand, efforts will focus on investigating the recent fire incident, providing assistance, and overseeing reconstruction work, to identify root causes, address vulnerabilities, and implement systemic reforms to prevent similar tragedies. On the other hand, the government will continue to innovate in promoting economic development, improving livelihoods, enhancing social governance, and better integrating into and serving the broader national development agenda.
He expressed his hope to work sincerely and collaboratively with the new Legislative Council, listening to the voices of citizens, studying the deep-seated challenges facing Hong Kong, exploring effective approaches to deepen reform and development, and steadily advancing good governance, all with the shared goal of building a better Hong Kong.
