Today (Dec. 7) marks the voting day for the Hong Kong Legislative Council election, with active participation from various sectors of society. Mohammad Ilyas Alex, a representative of the Chinese Overseas Friendship Association, noted that the election process was smooth and orderly. He emphasized that higher voter turnout would make the elected LegCo members more representative and better able to reflect public opinion, thereby strengthening the connection between the LegCo and the public.
Alex specifically mentioned the recent fire incident in Tai Po, highlighting how the event demonstrated the spirit of unity and mutual assistance within Hong Kong society, including ethnic minority communities. He believes that the new LegCo members should take on greater responsibility, actively addressing public needs on issues ranging from fire safety to economic development.
Regarding future work, Alex expressed hope that the newly elected LegCo members would propose more constructive policies. He noted that the current employment market situation is not ideal and hopes for future reforms to improve the lives of citizens. Finally, he once again expressed sorrow over the Tai Po fire incident and hoped that Hong Kong society would avoid similar tragedies in the future.
The election proceeded in a calm atmosphere, with many citizens and community representatives hoping that the new LegCo would better align with public sentiment and drive society forward.
