In response to the recent fire at Wong Fuk Court in Tai Po, the Housing Bureau and the Housing Department have not paused for a moment and have been continuously arranging for affected residents in need to move into transitional housing or projects under the Hong Kong Housing Society, the Housing Bureau spokesperson stated today (Dec. 6). The Housing Department's interim housing and temporary shelters are also being actively prepared.
The Housing Bureau expressed the need to clarify some misunderstandings, as there have been ongoing media reports suggesting that fire-affected residents moving into transitional housing are only granted a few months of rent-free accommodation before having to pay rent. The Housing Bureau spokesperson pointed out that such statements are not true.
The spokesperson reiterated that, considering the urgent situation faced by the fire-affected residents, the Housing Bureau had already made special arrangements to provide accommodation assistance with fully waived rent for those moving into transitional housing or the aforementioned projects. In other words, if needed, affected residents can stay for a relatively longer period. The government will continue to support affected residents with accommodation, and those in need need not worry about related rental expenses or the duration of their stay.
Fire-affected residents who wish to apply for transitional housing under the Housing Bureau can call 3611 8482 for inquiries. For inquiries about the Hong Kong Housing Society's dedicated resettlement estates, temporary rental housing projects, or vacant units in rental estates, please call 2839 1393. For any questions regarding the Housing Department's interim housing or temporary shelters, residents can call 2658 4430.
