The highly anticipated sci-fi epic Avatar: Fire and Ash, directed by acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron, recently held its global premiere in Los Angeles, dazzling audiences with its star-studded event.
The film was originally scheduled to host its Chinese premiere, complete with a red carpet event, on Dec. 8 in Sanya, Hainan. However, on Dec. 2, the organizers announced that the red carpet segment had been canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances."
They issued an apology to fans who had purchased red carpet tickets and offered refund and compensation arrangements. The news quickly sparked significant attention on Chinese social media, trending on Weibo's entertainment hot topics list.
Speculation arose among netizens that the cancellation might be related to the recent devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong. Observers noted that the film was initially marketed in China under the subtitle "Fire and Ash," but that this subtitle has since been removed.
The red carpet event in Sanya, for which tickets were sold, was expected to include an appearance by James Cameron himself. Many ticket holders reported receiving an email notification about the cancellation, which read:
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, we regret to inform you that the red carpet segment of the Chinese premiere for Avatar 3, originally scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, in Sanya, Hainan, has been canceled. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding."
Some netizens expressed understanding, noting that Avatar 3 focuses heavily on fire as a narrative and visual theme. They suggested that, given the public's emotional sensitivity following the Tai Po fire, adjusting the event plans was a prudent decision.
