The devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court on Nov. 26 caused significant human casualties and claimed the lives of numerous pets. Today (Dec. 2), marking the seventh day since the tragedy, volunteers set up a "Pet Wish Wall" near Kwong Fuk Estate. The wall quickly filled with messages from passersby, expressing love and blessings for the pets lost in the fire.
Ruby, a volunteer on-site, explained that the wall was erected early this morning to provide a space for those who lost their pets and for animal lovers to mourn and express their condolences. "We hope people can leave their blessings here to comfort the spirits of these innocent little lives," she said.
Messages on the wish wall included heartfelt words such as, "May the pets of Wang Fuk Court cross the Rainbow Bridge and live happily without worries," and, "It's okay now, you're not in pain anymore. Don't worry about Mom and Dad; knowing you're happy makes us happy too."
Meanwhile, DotDotNews reporters observed several missing pet notices posted on streetlamps and walls near the fire site. These notices, written by Wang Fuk Court residents, included details such as the pets' names, physical descriptions, owners' addresses, and contact information. The wording in these notices conveyed the deep anxiety of the owners, who desperately hope neighbors will help in locating their beloved animals.
Ruby shared that many residents, especially those from the lower floors of the affected buildings, firmly believe their pets managed to escape during the fire. "Some think their pets may have hidden in nearby grasslands or fled to the local market," Ruby noted, adding that volunteers have been helping produce and post the notices in the hopes of reuniting pets with their owners.
Animal rescue efforts are also underway. Members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been assisting within the cordoned-off fire site, setting up pet cages and providing canned pet food to attract and rescue lost animals. Their goal is to help worried owners reunite with their pets as soon as possible.
