Chief Executive John Lee reiterated today (Dec. 2) the government's unwavering commitment to investigating the fatal five-alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po and pursuing all responsible parties. Speaking before the Executive Council meeting, he outlined the ongoing multi-agency efforts to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the victims.
Lee confirmed that the three dedicated task forces established earlier are progressing rapidly. The investigation and regulation working group is thoroughly examining the incident to establish accountability. A cross-departmental investigation team led by the Fire Services Department is delving into the cause of the blaze. Furthermore, the police have arrested 13 individuals on suspicion of manslaughter, while the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has arrested 12 people concerning suspected corruption in the building maintenance works at the estate.
Preliminary findings, Lee stated, indicate fraudulent practices in the renovation works. The investigation has uncovered a premeditated mix of compliant, fire-retardant protective netting with substandard, non-fire-retardant netting, intended to deceive inspections. Coupled with the extensive use of highly flammable foam materials on-site, these factors were key reasons the fire ignited and spread so rapidly.
The Chief Executive expressed his hope that the joint investigation by the police and the ICAC would be completed swiftly, leading to the prosecution of the suspects. He emphasized that the investigation would extend to all related individuals to ensure everyone culpable is held accountable under the law.
Lee demanded a comprehensive investigation and meaningful reform, calling to channel grief into a force for change. He pledged to break down entrenched interests, leave no stone unturned, regardless of who is involved, and pursue accountability to the fullest extent. The goal, he stated, is to bring the complete truth to light, ensure justice is served, allow the deceased to rest in peace, and provide reassurance to the living.
