A devastating fire broke out on the afternoon of November 26 at Wang Fuk Court, a public housing estate in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong, resulting in significant casualties and injuries.
Following the incident, President Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed deep concern. He immediately sought details regarding the rescue operations and the condition of the victims.
President Xi instructed the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR to convey his condolences to the families of the deceased, including a firefighter who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. He also extended sympathy and support to the injured and those affected by the fire.
Xi urged the Hong Kong SAR Government to make all-out efforts to extinguish the fire, carry out search and rescue operations, provide medical treatment to the injured, and ensure proper post-incident support for all victims. He also directed the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, along with the Liaison Office, to provide full assistance and coordinate with relevant departments and local authorities to minimize casualties and property loss.
The Hong Kong SAR Government has activated its emergency response mechanism. The Central Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong has set up a dedicated emergency task force and is working closely with local authorities to support ongoing rescue efforts.
Search, rescue, and recovery operations are currently underway.
