The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has announced that it will issue the Standby Signal No. 1 today (Nov. 10) at 12:20 p.m. as Tropical Cyclone Fung-wong enters within 800 kilometers of HK.
As of 8:00 a.m., Fung-wong was located approximately 480 kilometers southeast of Dongsha Island, moving west-northwest at a speed of about 15 kilometers per hour, traversing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.
According to the Observatory's current forecast, Fung-wong is expected to track northward over the northeastern South China Sea and will pass closest to HK between Tuesday night (Nov. 11) and early Wednesday morning (Nov. 12), skimming approximately 400 kilometers east of the city or farther.
The HKO will monitor Fung-wong's intensity, distance from HK, and local wind conditions to assess whether a higher signal, such as the Strong Wind Signal No. 3, is necessary. Following its closest approach, Fung-wong is expected to move toward Taiwan while weakening under the influence of the northeast monsoon.
The combined effects of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon will bring strong winds and rough seas along the Guangdong coast over the next two to three days. Cooler weather is expected, with urban temperatures dropping to around 20°C by midweek. Minor flooding may occur in some low-lying coastal areas tonight through early tomorrow morning.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather information from the HKO.
