A new species of sedum, named "Sedum nankunshanense", was recently discovered in the Guangdong Nankun Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve by a research team from Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The findings were published in the Journal of Sun Yat-sen University.

Professor Fan Qiang from Sun Yat-sen University explained that "Sedum nankunshanense" is a perennial succulent characterized by its petite size and distinct morphological features. During non-flowering periods, its basal leaves form rosettes, characterized by spoon-shaped leaves with truncated tips and short petioles—a key identifying trait. The flower stems, measuring just 1.0–2.8 cm in height, emerge from the center of the rosettes and bear cymes with 2–3 branches, each producing 3 to several flowers.

Compared to closely related species like "Sedum subtile", "Sedum nankunshanense" possesses the smallest basal leaves and the largest flowers. This discovery highlights the untapped potential of Nankun Mountain in biodiversity conservation, ecological research, and species classification.

Currently, the species is only known to grow in fissures of rocks at an elevation of 990 meters within the reserve, making it a typical mountain endemic. The Nankun Mountain Nature Reserve now documents six species from the Crassulaceae family, including "Sedum nankunshanense", "Sedum japonicum", "Sedum oryzifolium", "Sedum lineare", and "Sedum sarmentosum".

"Sedum species are highly sensitive to environmental changes and microhabitat conditions, serving as critical bioindicators for ecosystem health," Professor Fan emphasized. The discovery not only adds to the list of endemic species in Nankun Mountain but also suggests that the region's biodiversity may be underestimated, warranting further investigation and conservation efforts. This finding holds significant value for advancing ecosystem studies, biodiversity protection, and plant taxonomy research.
