Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York City on Nov. 4 local time, making history as the city's first millennial, first Muslim, and first Indian-American mayor.
On the eve of the election, former President Donald Trump took to social media to threaten that Mamdani's election would lead to a "shut off of the taps" — meaning severe cuts to federal funding for New York City. In his statement, Trump labeled Mamdani a "crazy communist" and a "radical leftist," dismissing his policies as "false promises."
Trump further asserted that he firmly believed Mamdani's election would plunge New York City into total economic and social disaster.
Mamdani, currently a New York State Assemblyman, rose to prominence after winning the Democratic mayoral primary in June, establishing himself as a rising star within the party. His primary campaign was built on far-left Democratic platforms, including outspoken support for Palestine — describing Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide — and advocating for increased corporate taxes.
