A UPS cargo plane crashed near Louisville International Airport on Nov. 4, killing seven people and injuring 11 others. The MD-11 aircraft, bound for Honolulu, caught fire during takeoff and crashed south of the airport.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear stated that among the confirmed fatalities were three crew members and four individuals on the ground. The number of casualties may still rise as search operations continue.
The crash triggered a massive fire that required hundreds of firefighters to contain. Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill confirmed that crews are conducting a thorough grid-by-grid search for additional victims in the affected area.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into the incident. While the cause remains undetermined, preliminary reports suggest the aircraft was already on fire during its takeoff roll.
UPS confirmed the aircraft was carrying three crew members and expressed full cooperation with investigating authorities. Residents within a five-mile radius have been advised to shelter in place, and surrounding roads remain closed indefinitely.
