Carlos Manso, the mayor of Uruapan city in Michoacán state, was killed on the evening of Nov. 1 (local time) after being shot during a public event. The attack occurred as Manso was leading citizens in celebrations for a traditional Mexican festival.
According to Reuters, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum convened an emergency security cabinet meeting on the morning of Nov. 2. She later posted on social media platform X to condemn the "cowardly" assassination.
"We reiterate that we will mobilize all state forces to achieve peace and security," Sheinbaum wrote, vowing to end impunity and ensure full justice is served.
Reports indicate that Manso sustained at least six gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital. A civilian and one of the mayor's bodyguards were also injured in the assault. One attacker was killed at the scene, and two others were arrested.
Authorities previously stated that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
