According to reports from China News citing US media on Oct. 27, US President Donald Trump addressed the recent crashes of a US Navy helicopter and a fighter jet in the South China Sea. When asked by reporters, Trump called the back-to-back crashes "very unusual" and raised the possibility of a fuel problem.
"They think it might be bad fuel. We're gonna find out. Nothing to hide, sir," Trump said.
According to the US Navy, at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time on Oct. 26, an MH-60R "Seahawk" helicopter belonging to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 crashed into the South China Sea while conducting a mission after taking off from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier. All three crew members onboard were rescued.
Shortly afterward, at 3:15 p.m. local time, an F/A-18F "Super Hornet" fighter jet from Strike Fighter Squadron 22 also crashed into the South China Sea during a mission after taking off from the same aircraft carrier. Both crew members ejected and were safely rescued.
The US military has stated that investigations into the causes of both crashes are currently underway.
