The WTT Star Contender London tournament concluded on Sunday (Oct. 26) with the mixed doubles gold medal match, where Hong Kong's top pairing of Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem, affectionately known as the "Wong-Doo Duo," fell short in a 1-3 defeat to Lin Yun-ju and Cheng I-ching. Despite settling for silver, the HK duo gained significant ranking points, boosting their chances of securing a spot in December's year-end finals at the HK Coliseum.
Seeded second in the tournament, Wong and Doo made an impressive run to the final, winning three consecutive matches along the way. In Sunday's showdown, they took the first game 11-8 but were edged out in the next three, losing 9-11, 7-11, and 9-11.
Although Wong and Doo did not claim the title this time, their haul of ranking points from this tournament strengthens their position in the race for the year-end finals. According to the latest WTT rankings released yesterday, the duo is currently ranked 8th in year-end standings, with the London silver likely aiding their qualification for the prestigious event on home soil.
The WTT Finals will take place from Dec. 10 to 14 at the HK Coliseum, featuring the top 16 men's and women's singles players, as well as the top 7 mixed doubles teams based on ranking points. Many elite players have already secured their spots, including the Chinese national team's Wang Chuqin, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Manyu, Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto and Miwa Harimoto, and France's Felix Lebrun.
