Accelerators can provide resources and systematic support to start-ups, expedite the commercialization of innovation and technology achievements, identify business development scenarios, and foster the growth of start-ups, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong stated in a blog post today (Oct. 25).
Sun noted that by the end of last year, the number of start-ups in Hong Kong had reached 4,700, a 10% increase compared to the previous year. Hong Kong's ranking in the 2025 Global Innovation Index continued to climb, reaching 15th place globally, indicating that Hong Kong's innovation and technology ecosystem is steadily improving.
"However, as start-ups transition from the budding stage to the growth stage, more comprehensive and targeted measures are needed to support their rapid development."
To this end, the SAR government announced last year the launch of a three-year HK$180 million I&T Accelerator Pilot Scheme, which provides matching grants to experienced professional start-up service organizations from home and abroad to establish accelerator bases in Hong Kong. This is Hong Kong's first government funding scheme specifically targeting accelerators, which will help accelerate the growth of start-ups.
Another initiative to expedite the development of Hong Kong's innovation and technology industry—the I&T Industry-Oriented Fund—will also be launched soon, with the aim of leveraging more market capital for investment in the innovation and technology industry.
"It is believed that by seizing opportunities and continuously promoting the integrated development of the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong's innovation and technology development will undoubtedly become faster, better, and stronger."
