On July 14, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong attended a meeting of the Legislative Council's Information Technology and Broadcasting Affairs Committee to deliver an opening speech regarding the establishment of the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Institute. Sun expressed hopes that the institute would become a core engine driving the development of AI in Hong Kong, integrating and enhancing current efforts, resource allocation, and efficiency in the field.
Sun pointed out that the main public functions proposed for the R&D institute include advancing cutting-edge research in key areas of AI in Hong Kong; promoting the integration of AI technology with industry to accelerate the transformation of research outcomes and enable high-quality development across various sectors; providing the government with recommendations to support AI development; fostering international exchanges to attract world-class talent; enhancing awareness and training in AI, and promoting its widespread application.
He indicated that, if supported, further refinement of the proposals and execution details would follow, to seek approval from the Legislative Council for the allocated HK$1 billion within this financial year. This would facilitate the timely initiation of the institute's establishment, including the formation of a company, appointment of a board of directors, and recruitment of a CEO and other key personnel, to have the institute operational by the 2026-27 fiscal year.
