A California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle, part of the U.S. Vice President's security motorcade, was struck by artillery shell fragments on Oct. 18 (local time) during an event marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
The CHP stated that the incident occurred during a live-fire demonstration. No injuries were reported, although the vehicle sustained damage.
At the time of the incident, the CHP was conducting traffic control operations on the highway. Following the event, the military immediately halted further live-fire exercises and initiated a safety inspection.
California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the exercise as "reckless," emphasizing that public safety should not be jeopardized for what he termed a "vanity performance." The White House and the U.S. Department of Defense have not yet issued responses to the incident.
