As the U.S. federal government shutdown entered its 18th day, the White House announced it would freeze US$11 billion allocated for infrastructure projects in states led by Democratic governors, with the possibility of eventual cancellation.
Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, stated on social media on Oct. 17 that the freeze would affect numerous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects in these states. Impacted initiatives include San Francisco's Riverside Park development, New York City's water and sewage system upgrades, and bridge expansion plans in Massachusetts. Projects in Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, New Hampshire, and New Jersey are also affected. Reuters noted that all the states impacted had voted against President Trump in the 2024 election.
Since the government shutdown began, the administration has frozen or canceled hundreds of projects nationwide, totaling at least US$28 billion. These include infrastructure, climate-related, and clean energy development programs.
