A magnitude 7.5 earthquake jolted the Philippine Islands region at 9:43 am on Oct. 10, Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The quake, which struck at a depth of 50 kilometers, had its epicenter located at latitude 7.55 degrees north and longitude 127.00 degrees east.
The CENC reported that four major and medium-sized cities lie within a 300-kilometer radius of the epicenter. The closest among them is Davao, approximately 162 kilometers away.
Videos shared by residents on social media platforms captured the immediate aftermath of the tremor. Footage showed ceiling materials collapsing inside buildings, with people indoors scrambling for cover. A large number of residents were seen fleeing to open areas for safety. Other clips documented a noticeable drop in water levels in some coastal areas, raising concerns among experts that it could be a precursor to a "drawdown-type" tsunami.
