On Oct. 1, local time, a spokesperson for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's office announced that the state would not pay to keep the Statue of Liberty open as it has done in past government shutdowns. The governor stated that this time, the torch of the Statue of Liberty might be "completely extinguished."
Hochul mentioned that more than 100,000 federal workers in New York State have already been furloughed or are at risk of furlough, including dozens of staff working at the Statue of Liberty. It remains unclear whether and when the Statue of Liberty will shut down.
