The Standby Signal No. 1 is currently in effect. The Hong Kong Observatory announced today (Oct. 4) that it plans to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. It will also assess whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal will be needed tonight.
According to the Observatory, Severe Tropical Storm "Matmo" has been steadily moving across the central-northern part of the South China Sea over the past few hours. As "Matmo" approaches, local winds are expected to strengthen progressively later today.
"Matmo" is forecasted to intensify gradually and track closer to the Leizhou Peninsula area. The Observatory will closely monitor the storm's intensity, the proximity of its gale-force wind zone to the Pearl River Estuary, and changes in local wind conditions to determine whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal is warranted tonight.
