The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) announced today (Oct. 3) that tropical cyclone "Matmo" is expected to cross Luzon and enter within 800 kilometers of HK later today. The HKO is considering issuing the Standby Signal No. 1 tonight.
According to current forecasts, Matmo will move toward the area between the Leizhou Peninsula and the eastern coast of Hainan Island over the weekend, gradually intensifying. Unstable weather conditions are expected in HK from late tomorrow through Sunday, with strong winds, rough seas, swells, and occasional squally showers.
The HKO stated that it would monitor Matmo's proximity to the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity, and local wind conditions to assess whether a higher tropical cyclone warning signal needs to be issued during the day tomorrow.
