The "Voyage Into Shu: Exploring Sanxingdui and Jinsha - An Immersive Archaeological VR and Exhibition" recently opened at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. Featuring a variety of precious artifacts alongside VR and multimedia interactive installations, the exhibition offers visitors an all-encompassing experience of the Sanxingdui excavation process while providing an in-depth understanding of the ancient Shu civilization.
"Voyage Into Shu" traces the origins and development of the ancient Shu civilization, drawing on cutting-edge archaeological discoveries and academic research. It highlights the cultural exchanges between the ancient Shu region, the Central Plains, and the Lingnan Pearl River Delta, as the Yangtze River civilization extended its reach to the southern Silk Road and eventually to the shores of HK.
A standout highlight of the exhibition is the "Exploring Sanxingdui VR Experience". At the entrance, visitors can select a character and wear VR headsets to dive into the world of ancient Shu. In this virtual realm, they can move freely through a 3D environment and enjoy a personalized, self-guided exploration.
In this area, participants can enjoy a 30-minute immersive journey through four specially designed scenes. "Bronze Road" showcases enlarged versions of the bronze giant and the golden mask, allowing visitors to learn about the history and culture of Sanxingdui. In "Night of the Museum," the "living" bronze giant guides participants to overlook the Sanxingdui area. Through "Exploration of Sacrificial Pit," visitors gain an in-depth understanding of the archaeological process and research findings, and finally, in "Flying Over Sanxingdui Ruins," they will drive a golden mask and shuttle through virtual historical scenes, experiencing the history and evolution of Sanxingdui. This experience seamlessly combines education, interactivity, and immersion, offering visitors an unforgettable cultural journey.
Beyond the VR experience, the exhibition also features a "CAVE Immersive Ancient ShuArchaeological Site", a five-screen installation that recreates the archaeological site. With the "Dual-Screen Archaeological Interaction System", visitors can act as archaeologists, using touchscreens to excavate, analyze, and compare artifacts. This hands-on experience allows them to witness and participate in the meticulous work of real archaeologists. Additionally, the exhibition provides visitors with detailed insights into the artifacts on display, further enhancing their understanding of the ancient Shu civilization.
A dedicated cultural-creative zone offers a variety of Sanxingdui-themed merchandise, including handbags, bronze-style pillows, Sunbird stationery, and mask-shaped fridge magnets. These items, some authorized by the Sanxingdui Museum, combine aesthetics, collectibility, and educational value, allowing visitors to bring a piece of history home with them.
