A devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Cebu Province, Philippines, at 9:59 p.m. on Sept. 30. The shallow quake, with a depth of just 10 kilometers, caused widespread destruction and was followed by multiple aftershocks.
As of now, at least 72 people have been confirmed dead, and 294 others have been injured, according to local disaster response authorities. Cebu Province, with a population nearing one million, has been hit hardest by the disaster.
The earthquake has severely impacted urban areas and popular tourist destinations, raising fears that the death toll and injury count may continue to rise.
This disaster is the most lethal earthquake in the Philippines since 2013, when a 7.2-magnitude quake struck Bohol, killing 222 people and injuring 976.
