A 7.3-magnitude earthquake jolted the waters off the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, at 10:37 a.m. Saturday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The epicenter was monitored at 53.05 degrees north latitude and 160.45 degrees east longitude. The earthquake struck at a depth of 20 km, the center said.
Over a month ago, on July 30, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, making it one of the strongest earthquakes of this century. The quake prompted tsunami warnings for a vast area, including Japan, Hawaii, the US West Coast, and New Zealand. While many warnings have since been downgraded, regions like Chile have raised their tsunami alert to the highest level for most of their 6,400-kilometer Pacific coastline.
