The airport departure tax has been increased from HK$120 to HK$200, effective immediately.
The new tax applies to tickets purchased from October 1 onward, and the exemption scope is expanded on the same day. Travelers arriving in Hong Kong who depart within 48 hours can be exempted from this tax. They can apply for a refund through electronic platforms, either in cash or other methods.
Authorities stated that the new exemption aims to encourage more travelers to transit through Hong Kong, enhancing the multi-modal transport network in the Greater Bay Area and strengthening Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub. Expanding the exemption also provides greater incentives for transit passengers to choose overnight stays, allowing them more time to explore and enjoy Hong Kong's unique charm, while their hotel stays and local spending can benefit the economy.
Initially, authorities projected an annual revenue increase of HK$1.6 billion, but after accounting for the two exemptions, the estimate is reduced to HK$930 million.
