According to CCTV News, on Sept. 28 local time, maintenance workers discovered the body of a stowaway inside the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane.
The flight had recently arrived at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Europe.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has launched a homicide investigation into the case. American Airlines stated that they are fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation. Meanwhile, the airport expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic incident.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed, and the case remains under investigation.
It is known that commercial aircraft fly at altitudes of 9,000 to 10,000 meters, where the landing gear compartment lacks heating and pressurization. Temperatures in such conditions can drop to as low as -50°C.
According to US media reports, hiding in the landing gear compartment is a common but extremely dangerous method of stowing away. Statistics show that over 77% of individuals attempting this method do not survive.
