Super Typhoon Ragasa strikes Hong Kong. Yesterday (Sept. 23) at around 3 p.m., a family of four in Chai Wan was swept into the sea while watching the waves near the cargo warehouse on Kai Yip Street. Three of them were caught in a massive wave and were rescued and taken to Eastern Hospital. As of this morning (Sept. 24), the 38-year-old mother, surnamed Li, remains in critical condition; the 40-year-old father, surnamed Zhen, is in serious condition; and the 5-year-old son is also in critical condition.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. yesterday when the family was on the breakwater opposite the Zung Fu Hong Kong Island Car Centre watching the waves. The mother and her 5-year-old son were swept away by a large wave, prompting the 40-year-old father to jump into the sea to rescue them. The three were saved by local boatmen and firefighters who arrived on the scene and were taken to Eastern Hospital for emergency treatment, but the mother and son were in a coma. The 9-year-old daughter who was also watching the waves was unharmed.
Footage from the scene shows the three being pulled from the water by local boatmen, with firefighters jumping onto the boat to provide assistance. Additionally, netizens shared videos of the rescue, showing two shirtless men on a small boat pulling a woman from the water, her face appearing dark and her body limp and unresponsive.
Police have warned that during the Super Typhoon Ragasa hitting Hong Kong, residents should refrain from going out for "wave chasing" for their own safety.
