The super typhoon Ragasa, known as the "king of winds," is advancing with great intensity, posing a threat comparable to Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018. The No. 3 strong wind signal is currently in effect, and the Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No. 8 gale or storm signal at 2:20 pm today (Sept. 23).
The Observatory stated that this morning, in collaboration with the Government Flying Service, a dropsonde was deployed over the northwestern part of Ragasa. Winds of up to 135 km/h, reaching hurricane force, were recorded as far as 120 kilometers from its center, indicating that the hurricane's reach is quite extensive.
The Observatory explained that the dropsonde can collect data on atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. This data is essential for assessing the intensity and wind structure of the tropical cyclone.
