According to foreign media reports, the super typhoon Ragasa has severely impacted northern Philippines, causing widespread destruction, resulting in one death and seven injuries, with nearly ten thousand people forced to evacuate and widespread power outages. The province of Batanes has been particularly hard hit, with Calayan Island and Cagayan Province experiencing strong winds and heavy rain that knocked motorcycles over.
In Cagayan Province, several landslides and flooding have occurred, leading to the evacuation of over 8,000 people. More than 1,200 individuals in the western part of Apayao Province have been relocated to emergency shelters, and there is a total power outage in the northern mountainous areas and Kalayaan Municipality. Local authorities described the storm's impact as "disastrous."
The Philippine meteorological agency issued the highest level of storm signal, Signal No. 5, at 5 pm local time, warning that all areas could face extreme impacts, including damage to buildings and disruptions to power and communication. Low-lying and coastal areas, such as Cagayan and Batanes, are highly likely to experience life-threatening storm surges, with water levels potentially exceeding 3 meters.
