On Sept. 18, France witnessed large-scale strikes and protests across multiple cities, with over 500,000 participants nationwide, including 55,000 in Paris. The demonstrations, led by unions from sectors such as transportation, education, and healthcare, opposed the government's fiscal austerity measures and demanded a fairer economic policy.
Violence and arrests marred protests in Paris, Lyon, and Rennes, with over 300 people detained. The strikes severely disrupted public transportation. Prime Minister Lecornu condemned the violence but pledged to continue dialogue with unions.
The unrest stems from a controversial 2026 budget proposed in July, which included cutting public holidays and healthcare spending to reduce debt. Former Prime Minister Bayrou resigned on Sept. 8 after losing a confidence vote over the policy. On Sept. 10, grassroots protests without union leadership drew around 175,000 people.
