Sha Tau Kok has increasingly attracted tourists seeking unique experiences in recent years. Deputy Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk revealed yesterday (Sept. 9) that since the launch of the second phase of the STK Pier opening up scheme last year, approximately 230,000 visitors have applied for "Closed Area Permits" to enter the area. He confirmed the scheme is operating smoothly and announced plans to further open restricted zones while evaluating the possibility of expanding access to remaining boundary areas.

During a Legislative Council meeting yesterday (Sept. 9), concerns were raised about permit accessibility. While the current daily permit quota stands at 3,000, Cheuk noted that only one-third of spots are typically filled, dropping to just 10% in summer. Although same-day permits present logistical challenges due to the area's restricted status, authorities are considering eliminating the quota system.

Discussions also addressed the potential opening of Chung Ying Street. Cheuk explained that the lack of a clear boundary with mainland China makes access management complex. The Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) is coordinating with Shenzhen authorities to explore possibilities, with the Security Bureau ready to implement corresponding measures.

Regarding permit processing, Cheuk announced that starting mid-month, residents will receive permits within two working days, while tour groups can obtain permits within one day. The government is reviewing whether to reduce the border restricted area, particularly since current zones like Chung Ying Street, Sha Tau Kok Bay, and Mai Po are essentially uninhabited.
