The solo exhibition Disharmony in Harmony by Terence Lee, one of Hong Kong's most distinctive and unconventional artists, will be held at the Pao Galleries (5/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre) from September 4 to 10, 2025. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of Lee's four-decade-long artistic journey, with free admission to the public.
Terence Lee stands apart in Hong Kong's artistic landscape. For over four decades, his art has flowed freely, unburdened by the constraints of medium or convention. Moving seamlessly between Eastern and Western influences, realism and abstraction, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, Lee has forged a unique and recognisable style. Recurring themes of faith, inspiration, and the artist's muses are woven throughout his diverse body of work. His fearless exploration, acceptance of imperfection, reverence for nature, unwavering beliefs, and enduring hope are the driving forces behind his creative vision.
"Disharmony in Harmony" is a dialogue across time, revisiting Lee's 1984 solo exhibition, "Harmony amidst Discordance," which was held in the same venue. Forty years ago, a young Lee, fresh from studying ceramics and painting in the United States, was presented to the public by his father at the Pao Galleries. Today, Lee returns, no longer a fledgling artist seeking harmony within dissonance. He now creates harmony with apparent ease and clarity, yet beneath the surface lies the same uncompromising spirit of his youth.
This exhibition serves as a semicolon in Lee's artistic journey, a moment to reflect on four decades of creation and to rediscover this extraordinary figure in Hong Kong's art landscape.
