The UK Met Office stated on Sept. 1 that the country has experienced its hottest summer since 1884.
According to a Reuters report, the average temperature in the UK from June to August this year was 16.1°C, which is 1.51°C higher than the long-term average. This surpasses the previous record of 15.76°C set in 2018, making it the hottest summer since records began in 1884.
The Met Office noted that although no extreme highs above 40°C were recorded this year, frequent heatwaves combined with consistently high average temperatures were the defining features of this summer.
This summer, the UK experienced four heatwaves, with the highest temperature of 35.8°C recorded in Faversham, southeast England. However, this figure remains lower than the historical record of 40.3°C set during the UK's summer of 2022.
Climate projections also indicate that, due to human-induced climate change, summers in the UK are expected to become hotter and drier in the future.
