Anti-immigrant demonstrations and racially motivated incidents are increasing across the UK, with reports of intimidation under the guise of patriotism becoming more frequent. Far-right groups are capitalizing on political rhetoric to stir hostility toward refugees and undocumented migrants.
A hotel in Epping, near London, has become a flashpoint for local discontent. Since 2020, the Bell Hotel has been used to house asylum seekers who arrived via the English Channel. Tensions escalated in July when an Ethiopian asylum seeker was accused of sexually assaulting a local teenager, sparking repeated protests—some turning violent—outside the premises.
The atmosphere has been further inflamed by misinformation and the actions of high-profile figures. Last year, after a tragic knife attack by a British-born teen, false claims spread online that the perpetrator was a Muslim asylum seeker, leading to retaliatory violence. Senior politicians have also been accused of amplifying fears, with one Conservative leader claiming women avoid parks for fear of "male refugees," and another seen attending far-right-backed rallies.
In multiple communities, people of color have faced harassment and abuse. A Black man playing with his granddaughter was falsely labeled a pedophile after a far-right activist shared a video. In Belfast, vigilante-style groups have been stopping non-white pedestrians and demanding identification.
Refugee support coalition "Stand With Refugees," which includes over 600 organizations, has issued an open letter urging political leaders to curb racist rhetoric and take responsibility for calming social tensions.
