U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to promote Russia-Ukraine peace talks have stalled, with recent U.S. media reports expressing skepticism about his negotiation plan. According to The Washington Post, Trump appeared frustrated last Friday (Aug. 22) when discussing the prospects of the talks, hinting that he may temporarily suspend his mediation efforts and would make further decisions based on the responses from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump stated during an interview at the White House, "I am not satisfied with anything about this conflict, not at all." When asked about the timeline for the peace talks, he reiterated his characteristic vague response, saying he would "wait two weeks." He also mentioned the possibility of imposing economic sanctions on Russia, emphasizing that the decision would depend on whether Russia makes progress that satisfies him within the next two weeks.
On Aug. 21, Trump posted a cryptic message on social media, suggesting that it is nearly impossible for Ukraine to win the war without attacking Russian territory, comparing it to "a sports team with excellent defense but no offense."
The report noted that within just a week, Trump shifted from boasting about his ability to quickly end the conflict to expressing doubts about facilitating a leaders' meeting, reflecting the lack of progress in his diplomatic efforts. Russian officials have denied the possibility of Putin meeting with Zelensky. Trump's stalled mediation efforts have also undermined his earlier claims of having resolved "10 international geopolitical conflicts" during his tenure—a number he recently increased from seven without providing specific details.
