The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that the Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force until at least 5 p.m. today (Aug. 23). A tropical depression located in the central South China Sea is tracking towards the waters south of Hainan Island and is expected to intensify gradually.

While the storm's wind field remains sufficiently far from the Guangdong coastline, it is forecast to pass about 500 kilometers south of HK tonight or early tomorrow morning. As a result, occasional strong winds are expected to affect southern HK and nearby waters during this period.

HK is expected to be mostly sunny and sweltering during the day. However, the city will turn cloudier in the afternoon as the storm's outer rainbands approach the Guangdong coast. Scattered showers, occasional thunderstorms, and rough seas are expected later today. Stronger winds and heavy rain are anticipated tomorrow.

The Observatory has issued a reminder for residents to stay away from shorelines and to stop all water activities.
