There are a few places in the world where the best money you'll ever spend is equivalent to the price of a bubble tea. In Beijing, that money is a ten-yuan note—the cost of admission to Jingshan Park. Located directly north of the Forbidden City, this imperial garden (during the Ming and Qing Dynasties) offers the most magnificent panoramic view of the Forbidden City.

The Jingshan Park is made up of several ancient pavilions and a man-made hill. The man-made hill was actually formed from the soil excavated to build the moats of the imperial palace. The climb to the peak of the hill is very gentle, which takes about 15 minutes. But it's a journey that leads you through layers of history and beauty.

Reaching the top of the central peak, you will arrive at the Wanchun Pavilion. This is the moment that defines the value of your admission tickets. The entire Forbidden City unfolds before you in a breathtaking display of symmetry and grandeur: the golden roofs of the palace complexes glow under the sun, arranged in perfect order, with the modern skyline of Beijing rising respectfully in the distance.

After taking in the view, a leisurely walk around the park reveals more of its charms. The park was once an imperial garden, built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and it retains an air of thoughtful elegance.

You might also encounter the "current residents" of the park, the "imperial cats", wandering around the park. Don't hesitate to pet them, as they are friendly and worldly-wise.

How to get there:

  • If you are visiting Jingshan Park after visiting the Forbidden City, you can exit from Shenwu Gate, and Jingshan Park is just across the street.
  • Subway:
    • Take Line 6 to Beihai North Station, exit B
    • Take Line 8 to Shichahai station, exit A2
