According to ABC News, a trendy toy store in La Puente, California, was burglarized in the early hours of Aug. 6, with surveillance footage showing at least four masked thieves breaking into the store and raiding the shelves. In a surprising twist, the culprits only stole collectible Labubu figurines from the popular Chinese designer toy brand Pop Mart, underscoring the soaring demand for these sought-after toys.
The burglary occurred around 1:30 a.m., with the store owner, Joanna Avendano, describing the crime as devastating. "We worked so hard to get to this point, [only] for them just to come in and like nothing take it all away," she said. According to Avendano, dozens of boxes of Labubu figures, the store's hottest collectible items, were stolen.
The store released surveillance footage on social media, showing the masked suspects smashing through the entrance and scouring the shelves before making off with multiple boxes of merchandise in a short period. Police later recovered the white Toyota Tacoma used by the burglars, but the suspects remain at large.
The Guardian reported that local authorities estimate the stolen Labubu figures are worth approximately US$7,000.
Avendano noted the stolen items were newly arrived inventory that had just been promoted, suggesting the thieves had carefully planned the heist.
