Thunderstorm activity fueled by a broad low-pressure trough may affect Hong Kong around midday today (July 31), with unstable weather expected to persist along the South China coast in the coming days.
The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that a broad low-pressure trough is causing the development of thunderstorms over the Pearl River Estuary, which could impact HK around midday. Residents are advised to stay alert to weather changes.
According to the Observatory, the low-pressure trough will continue to bring showers and thunderstorms to the southern China coast today and tomorrow. In addition, a hot southwesterly airstream will affect the region.
With the southwesterly flow becoming more active and upper-level disturbances influencing the area, the weather along the Guangdong coast will remain unstable from the weekend into early next week, with periods of heavy rain. Today's forecast for HK includes cloudy skies with occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms in some areas.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality issued a Yellow Rainstorm Warning at 10:00 a.m. today, predicting rainfall of 30 to 50 millimeters within 2 hours in areas including Luohu, Nanshan, Futian, the Pearl River Estuary, Shenzhen Bay, and Baoan District (specifically Shiyan, Fuyong, Xixiang, Xin'an, Hangcheng, and Fuhai subdistricts), as well as Longgang (Buji, Bantian, Nanwan, and Jihua subdistricts) and Longhua (Minzhi subdistrict). The city has entered a rainstorm alert status.
