South Korean man suspected of shooting his son at birthday party: Explosives found at home

A shocking incident of filicide occurred in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea, shocking the nation. A 63-year-old man is suspected of using a homemade firearm to kill his son in his 30s during his own birthday party. At the time of the incident, his daughter-in-law and two grandsons were also present, but fortunately, they were not harmed.

The incident took place on Sunday (July 21) evening when the suspect attended a birthday party organized by his son. He suddenly left the gathering and returned holding a homemade shotgun, shooting his son twice. The suspect’s daughter-in-law, two young grandsons, and other relatives were also present. The son, who was shot in the chest, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital.

After committing the crime, the suspect fled to Seoul but was arrested about three hours later. He was arrested by the police on charges of murder and violating firearms and explosives regulations. Authorities discovered nine gun bodies in the suspect's vehicle and found 5 or 6 metal tubes and 15 explosive devices at his residence in the Dobong district of Seoul. Some of the detonators included flammable liquids loaded in plastic bottles, set to explode at noon on Monday. Fortunately, the police managed to dismantle them in time, preventing greater casualties.

The suspect claimed he learned how to manufacture firearms from YouTube and had purchased the bullets 20 years ago, storing them in a warehouse. Regarding the motive for the crime, the police stated that the suspect claimed it was due to family discord, but he has not provided further details on the specific motive.
