Headmaster of Victoria Shanghai Academy: Maggie Koong passes away at 62

Victoria Shanghai Academy announced that its founder and headmaster, Maggie Koong, passed away in the US on the July 18 local time, at the age of 62. Koong had recently been laid to rest in California, and her family plans to hold a memorial service in Hong Kong at a later date.

Koong's mother, Christina Ting, founder of Victoria Kindergarten, sent a letter to parents today informing them of Koong's passing. In the letter, she praised Koong as not only a pillar of Victoria Kindergarten but also a beacon of hope and inspiration. She praised her deep passion for the school, tireless dedication, and unwavering support for parents and students will always be remembered and cherished. The positive energy Koong infused into every life she touched will have a lasting impact on our school and students.

The Secretary for Education, Christine Choi, expressed her sorrow over Koong's death on social media. She praised Koong for her lifelong commitment to promoting quality early childhood education and her significant contributions to the education sector in Hong Kong. Koong was dedicated to nurturing professional education talent and was actively involved in social services, focusing on the welfare of children and women, having held various educational public positions.

Choi stated that Koong was passionate about education and made important contributions to its development in Hong Kong, earning the respect of the education community, parents, and students. She extended heartfelt condolences to Koong's family and paid tribute to this exemplary figure who devoted her life to education.

Koong, along with her mother and daughter, was deeply involved in education across three generations. Her mother, Ting, was a former municipal council member and served as chairperson of the Eastern District Council. In 1965, Ting founded Victoria Kindergarten in Causeway Bay. Koong returned to Hong Kong in 1985 after studying in the US and joined the Victoria (China) Education Group, being one of the founders of Victoria Shanghai Academy in Hong Kong. Koong and her husband had two daughters; the younger daughter, graduated from the University of Chicago and also joined the Victoria Education Group in 2015.
