The Paris Prosecutor's Office announced a criminal investigation last Friday (July 11) into the social media platform X, following reports of algorithm manipulation for foreign interference.
According to Le Monde, the complainants suspect that X, owned by Elon Musk, is manipulating its content delivery algorithms to intentionally highlight far-right content and increase the visibility of certain candidates in recent European elections. The report states that the investigation involves two crimes classified as felonies under the criminal code related to cyberattacks, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and fines of up to €300,000 (approximately HK$2.753 million).
