The Tokara Islands in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture have been shaken by over 1,660 earthquakes in the past two weeks, according to statistics released by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) today (July 8). The region's seismic activity has significantly exceeded historical norms, prompting warnings of a potential magnitude 6 earthquake.
Authorities reported 180 earthquakes of intensity level 1 or higher on Sunday alone, followed by 60 additional tremors yesterday (July 7).
The strongest quake in recent weeks occurred last Thursday on Akuseki Island, registering a magnitude of 5.5 and an intensity level of lower 6 on the JMA seismic scale. Meanwhile, Suwanose Island recorded an intensity level 3 earthquake earlier this morning.
The JMA has urged local residents to remain vigilant and take precautions amid the ongoing seismic activity. Officials highlighted the possibility of a stronger quake, potentially reaching intensity level 6 on the JMA scale.
