US President Donald Trump dismissed billionaire Elon Musk's announcement of a new political party as "ridiculous" during a press on the afternoon of July 6. When asked about Musk's newly formed "America Party," Trump remarked that the entrepreneur "can have some fun with it," but he doubted its viability in the US political landscape.
Later that day, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing disappointment with Musk's recent behavior over the past five weeks, stating that Musk had gone "completely off the rails." Trump criticized Musk's idea of forming a third party, noting that such ventures have historically failed in the US.
"It's always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion. Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous," Trump said.
On July 5, Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political party, the "America Party," as tensions with the Trump administration escalated over the recently enacted "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Musk claimed the new party would represent the "80% of centrist voters" in American society, aiming to secure seats in Congress through elections.
Musk took to his social media platform on the same day to proclaim the establishment of the "America Party." "The support to opposition ratio is 2:1, indicating that you want a new party, and you will have one," Musk wrote. He further criticized the current state of the US, stating it is "bankrupt due to waste and corruption." He declared, "Today, the formation of the 'America Party' gives you freedom back."
In response to a comment asking whether his new party would participate in the 2026 midterm elections or the 2028 presidential race, Musk replied, "Next year."
Recently, Musk and President Trump have clashed over the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." On June 30, Musk harshly criticized the legislation championed by Trump, warning that if the law were passed, he would launch the "America Party" the very next day.
On July 4, President Trump signed the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" into effect. Just hours before the signing, Musk conducted a poll on his social media platform, asking users whether a new political party should be established to "liberate Americans" from the two-party dominance of Democrats and Republicans. Out of approximately 1.249 million votes, 65.4% supported the idea, while 34.6% opposed it.
Under US law, the formation of a political party qualified to participate in elections requires a complex certification process. This includes holding caucuses or conventions, electing temporary officers, and registering the party's name.
It remains unclear whether Musk's "America Party" has begun these necessary procedures.
