To celebrate the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, the PLA Navy's Shandong aircraft carrier strike group will make a historic port call from July 3-7. The flotilla, consisting of the Shandong carrier, missile destroyers Yan'an and Zhanjiang, and frigate Yuncheng, will anchor west of Hong Kong.
While only 2,000 lucky residents will board the Shandong through the system, these six prime viewing locations offer spectacular vantage points for all:
Tsing Yi Southwest
The closest land location to the carrier's anchorage near Tsing Yi Road, ideal for photography. Arrive early for the best spots.
Tai Pai Tsui Pier, Ma Wan
This southern tip of Ma Wan island, between Tsing Yi and Lantau, offers clear views. Accessible by: Ferries from Central Pier 2 (30-60 min intervals) or Tsuen Wan Pier (3 daily sailings) Buses NR330/331/332 from Tsing Yi/Tsuen Wan/Kwai Fong MTR stations
Disneyland Pier
While only the hull will be visible from this low-lying Lantau location, it's convenient for park visitors.
Finger Hill Summit, Peng Chau
This southwest vantage point on Peng Chau island provides panoramic views of the carrier group.
International Commerce Centre (ICC)
Hong Kong's tallest building offers elevated views of the naval formation from Kowloon side.
Mount Davis
Western Hong Kong Island residents can view the distant ships from this open vantage point - bring binoculars or telephoto lenses.
The Shandong's visit follows the 2017 port call by China's first carrier Liaoning. Authorities remind the public to observe from designated areas and follow security protocols during the historic event.
Pro tip: Early morning light offers best photography conditions with the carrier backlit by sunrise.
